Villages Of The Forest of Dean
Parkend
Parkend is my nearest village and one I regularly visit. It is probably most well known for being a key stop on the Dean Heritage Railway having lovely station and, signal box and pedestrian bridge. But my walkabout today has focussed very little on the railway and more about the buildings and surrounding Forest areas. For a small village I was surprised at how many photographic opportunities it presented to me, I hope you enjoy them, and I'm sure more will be added in due course.
A pleasant and thriving small village in the heart of the Forest. Once a coal mining and industrial centre, the village is now a peaceful backwater surrounded by woodlands, one of which is the RSPB Nagshead Nature Reserve. There are delightful village pubs, and a cricket pitch right in the centre of the village, ideal for spending a lazy summer's afternoon.
An impressive village building is the Dean Field Study Centre which is owned by Bristol City Education Authority and is used by visiting schoolchildren from that city, this building was the original engine house of the ironworks which was later converted by the Forestry Commission into a Forestry School whose students came from across the world to study.*
